Grading scale
A full point is earned by meeting each requirement on the rubric. There will be 6 requirements for each art project. A half point (.5) is earned by attempting and not meeting the requirement. Zero points are earned for an unsatisfactory attempt meeting the requirements. The grading scale starts at 100 and ends at 50. I gave you 50 points so do your best. Black on White Pottery Vase Acoma, and Hopi

- Scroll down and review the slideshow.
- Research on your computer Hopi, Acoma, or southwestern native american Indian pottery vases. Look for vase shapes and patterns to draw within each culture.
- Save your sketches and photograph them.
- On a sheet of computer paper draw a full scale version of the vase you would like to make. The overall dimensions can not exceed 10"x 8". You must draw your pattern on the vase. Save this sketch and photograph it.
- Use the coil technique to create your vase.
- Start with a small pan cake shape piece of clay the size of the base of your project.
- Roll your coils out to the size of your little finger. The coils can be as long as you want.
- Place 3 coils on the base and begin building your project.
- Smooth the inside and outside while shaping your vase.
- Hold your full scale drawing up to your project so the dimensions stay the same.
- The finished vase must be a replication of your to scale drawing. You must keep referring back to your drawing as you build your vase.
- Only use 2 or 3 coils at a time so you can control the shape as your build.
- When you have finished building your vase smooth it out and make it as even as you can.
- Now you can paint your vase with black under-glaze.
- Lightly draw with pencil your pattern on the vase.
- Lightly carve away the areas that will remain white.
- When you have finished post pictures of all of your drawings, your vase, reflection and grade.

- Research and draw some textures that occur in the environment. (ex, plants or animals)
- Research bottle shapes and draw them.
- Save your sketches and photograph them.
- On a sheet of computer paper draw a full scale version of you bottle. The overall dimensions can not exceed 10"x 8". You must draw your pattern on the vase. Save this sketch and photograph it.
- Use the coil technique to create your vase.

- Research and draw examples of how you would incorporate a negative space into the positive form of a vessel.
- Look back at vessel shapes from past projects and research some new ones.

- On a sheet of computer paper draw a full scale version of your vessel. The overall dimensions can not exceed 10"x 8". Save this sketch and photograph it.
- Use the coil technique to create your vase.

- Your vase should almost be leather hard before cutting an adding clay.
- You may have to cut an area out and add clay. Each student will have a different outcome with the negative space.
- Continue to smooth and burnish your vase.
- When you have finished post pictures of all of your drawings, your vase, reflection and grade.

- Research on your computer coffee mugs and cups. Look for shapes, patterns, and handles to draw.
- Save your sketches and photograph them. Your sketches will need to be posted later.
- On a sheet of computer paper draw a full scale version of the coffee mugs you would like to make. The overall dimensions can not exceed 5"x 6". Save this sketch and photograph it.
- Use a ruler to make measurements of the shape. NO STRAIGHT MUGS
- Use the coil technique to create two matching coffee mugs.
- Start with a small pan cake shape piece of clay the size of the base of your project.
- Roll your coils out to the size of your little finger. The coils can be as long as you want.
- Keep your coils small. No heavy mugs
- Place 3 coils on the base and begin building your project.
- Smooth the inside and outside while shaping your mugs. Must be super smooth
- Hold your full scale drawing up to your project so the dimensions stay the same.
- The finished coffee mugs must be a replication of your to scale drawing. You must keep referring back to your drawing as you build your vase.
- Only use 2 or 3 coils at a time so you can control the shape as your build.
- When you have finished building your mugs smooth it out and make it as even as you can.
- Use both hands to smooth. One hand on the inside and one hand on the outside .
- Make your handles and attach them.
- Remember to score slip and stick them on your cup shape.
- You may have to add a small coil around where the handle attaches.
- DO NOT CARRY YOUR MUG AROUND BY THE HANDLE UNTIL IT HAS BEEN FIRED.
- You will carve a simple chip pattern.
- The chip pattern is a pattern you carve where marks from the loop tool almost touch.

- SIGN YOUR MUGS ON THE BOTTOM WITH YOUR FULL NAME AND DATE.
- When you have finished post pictures of all of your drawings, your vase, reflection and grade.
Rubric
- Student successfully demonstrates researching and designing their project. (sketches of shapes, patterns, and handles). The final Image must be drawn to scale.)
- Student successfully demonstrates coil building and shaping their 2 coffee mugs to mirror their drawing.
- Student successfully demonstrated burnishing the inside and outside of the coffee mugs.
- Student successfully demonstrated making and adding the handle.
- Student successfully demonstrates carving a simple chip pattern.
- The student successfully demonstrated craftsmanship.
